Alumna speaks for Women's History Month
President of Indiana Sports Corporation, Susan Williams visited Franklin to celebrate March as Women’s History Month with her alma mater.
Williams’ March 23 speech was titled “In Order to be at the Right Place at the Right Time, You Gotta Be Somewhere.” Williams included personal stories throughout her speech to draw issues out and give advice to the young women of today.
Williams’ speech discussed her past and how she has become a successful woman in today’s society.
Williams started her collegiate education at Franklin College by earning her undergraduate degree in medieval English history.
After graduating from Franklin in 1967, she graduated from Indiana University with a master’s degree in political science. Early in her career, Williams was a classroom teacher, which taught her many things that she used later on in life.
“A successful classroom teacher can do anything,” Williams said.
Williams, who was primarily interested in history, said history departments in high schools today are male-dominated.
Williams said this presented a challenge, and through that, she said she learned that the women of today are not as involved with the fight for women’s rights.
The challenges that women are facing today are not as upfront as they used to be, but Williams said women need to be aware of this and continue to stand up for what is right.
Williams went on to share some ideas that she thinks are important for women to keep in mind. She said that women need to be prepared to say both yes and no in the right situations.
Williams said that knowing yourself and what you stand for is essential to success.
Williams also commented on how important it is to have mentors and role models in your life.
Williams ended her speech by saying we are all at certain places throughout our lives, and what truly makes the difference is whether or not we make the best of those situations.
