All exec positions contested for next year
For the first time in 10 years, every position on the executive board of Student Congress will be contested in next week’s election.
“I think it’s fabulous that all races are contested,” said Keri Ellington, adviser for Student Congress. “I think it’s important in the Democratic process that people have choices of who their leaders become and I’m excited that all students this year have that opportunity.”
As of 6 p.m. on Wednesday, there were nine candidates seeking the four positions of the executive board. Junior Brooke Gilbert and sophomore Sam West are seeking the position of president. Freshman Matt Brems and sophomore Megan Grant are running for vice president. Junior Katie Holland and freshman Barry Swigart are vying for secretary. Sophomores Darrel Feltner and Ali King and freshman Hanni Reynolds are all looking to be the next treasurer.
While the deadline to run for an executive office was not until Thursday at 5 p.m., Ellington said Wednesday she did not expect any other candidates for the four positions. The Franklin’s press deadline was Thursday morning.
Ellington added that not all class representative races are contested and will have the deadlines extended. These races include senior, junior and sophomore class representatives, as well as at-large and commuter representatives.
Applications for these positions will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday.
All candidates will be featured in the Student Congress Election Debate at 9 p.m. on Monday. Congress elections will be on Thursday.
