Good Morning: Boyle should be judged based on her singing abilities, not her attire and appearance
She has almost 50 million views and is destined to show up on the list of the most-viewed videos of all time on YouTube. Susan Boyle’s her name, surprising people is her game.
Boyle starred on “Britain’s Got Talent” to try and score a record deal with her voice. With bristly eyebrows, graying, curly hair and a slouched walk, she got into place onstage.
Instantly the audience was snickering. Once they heard what she wanted to do – become a professional singer – their laughing and curiosity grew stronger. But as soon as she opened her mouth to sing, they were speechless.
Now, with all of her popularity, and all of the media telling the tale of the world’s ignorance because of their judgment based on her looks, she decides to pamper herself a bit. Boyle went to a salon where she had her hair and eyebrows done.
Now, the world is in a fit.
Why? Because now she is no longer an underdog story. She’s not someone who the world can look to and remember why we don’t judge people. Now, she just looks like a normal, older woman who can sing.
It makes you think: if she hadn’t looked like she had before, would she have become such an overnight sensation? Is she only popular because we feel guilty for judging her situation too quickly?
In a way, yes. She has talent; there’s no disputing that. But her popularity is uncanny, and comes at the height of superficiality. Are we making up for all of our vanity by giving a not-so-attractive woman our attention? Either way, audiences are sending her mixed messages. To be pretty or not to be pretty, that is the question.
We didn’t like her when she didn’t care about her looks, back before she sang. But now that we’ve heard her sing, and she’s changed her look, we still don’t like it.
Boyle wanted to make her career in singing, not in being everyone’s poster child for “not judging a book by its cover.”
Why can’t we just appreciate her for her talent? Her looks have nothing to do with whether she can sing well or not.
If the world truly thinks that this is our wake up call to appreciate the things we might have judged before, then back off. Aren’t we judging her now? Our logic has become twisted.
Susan Boyle is Susan Boyle. Her popularity should come from her voice, not her looks.
