"Family Weekend" events spark entertainment

>> Talent Show - Rachel Friedman

FC’s Got Talent Friday night was good entertainment from Ty Eaten’s comedy act to first place winner, Amanda McIntosh’s clogging.

There were seven acts total including playing guitar, a piano and trumpet duet and a Rock Band group.

Third place winner Juan Hyde rapped a song he wrote.

Professor Steve Comiskey was introducing all the acts.  He provided light, funny stories and jokes for the audience to enjoy while people were setting up for the next act.

The opening act was very entertaining and creative.  They were a group of five that performed two Rock Band songs.  The group included Jeremy Gale, Matt Hamm, Mat Taylor, David Robertson and Josh Allison.  Jeremy Gale was also the second place winner for playing the piano and singing “Walking in Memphis.”

>> Flavor of Franklin - Nicole Keleman

The Flavor of Franklin brought local restaurants to Franklin's campus. The list included Aunt Judy’s Country Kitchen, Richard’s Kitchen and The Willard, all of whom brought food to be sampled.

Samples included chicken wings, artichoke pesto, and chicken and dumpling soup, among others. Many of the restaurants had provided menus for students, family, and staff to take. Franklin Gardens even put their menu in a water bottle.

Bo Rics didn’t have any samples, but they had a drawing for a basket of their products and gave a way a bag of coupons to everyone who entered the drawing for the basket.

>> Multicultural Dance - Kellie Todd

The Multicultural Dance extended expectations. There was no disk jockey, just dancers, and the students dancing were not from Franklin College.

The dancers were from dancing schools for different countries. Interesting enough, this reporter enjoyed herself at the dance. After watching the Irish dancers, I had the extreme urge to watch and learn River Dance.

Impressed? I was, as was the audience by the claps of their hands to the beats of music for the dancers. I saw several audience members at the end trying to dance an Irish Jig. I felt lighter than air as I walked back to my dorm to write this blog.

The Multicultural Dance, another score for Family Weekend.

>> Scrapbooking - Nicole Keleman

Students and their families had a chance to enjoy scrapbooking together using supplies provided for them. A starter kit including miniature photo books, photo sleeves of a variety of sizes, and tape squares was set at each place.

Participants were mostly male and female students and their female relatives but all of them took advantage of the opportunity to get creative. As long as it took to finish their books, they were allowed to cut and paste to their delight. Pictures were scheduled to be taken at Casino Night with a green screen.

 >> Casino Night - Rachel Friedman

Casino Night was one of the final events for Family Weekend.  Saturday night in the Branigin Room many students, siblings, parents and grandparents gambled away fake money for the chance to win many great prizes.

Along with gambling and great prizes to win, was also a chance to have free family pictures taken.

Roulette, craps and slot machines were just three ways to gamble away the money.  For the lucky ones who were able to hang on to their money there was an opportunity to exchange winnings for tickets to enter into the drawing and win prizes.

The grand prize was a flat screen TV.  Other prizes included an ihome, a digital picture frame and a gift card for Barnes and Noble.
