Date night: Roller rink provides fun, nostalgic experience

By Kelly Lynch, September 26, 2008

Most haven’t done it for years and probably don’t think they still know how. But roller skating is one of the few activities that burns a lot of calories and gives date night a little pizzazz from the usual dinner and a movie.

It might seem pointless, skating around in a circle just like we did when we were in elementary school, but there are some things that can be done to liven it up.

For instance, make it a competition between you and your date. See how many laps you can do in a certain amount of time. See who can do the most stunts, such as skating backwards or spinning.

Also, for fun, dress up. Make it a group date and everyone has to dress to a theme. Think of the usual prom or homecoming themes and apply it to the date such as "The ‘80s," "Under the Sea," or "A Night in Paris." It doesn’t have to be extravagant, but it’s a fun way to put a twist on an old activity. Also ladies, remember that long dresses or pants can get caught in your skates, so dress accordingly.

If you do decide to head to the rink, go with the classic roller skate. No roller blades. As cool as they are, they won’t give you the same effect as the original. Roller skates take you back to a time before they had roller blades as an alternative, and we all want to remember those days. And it might just be a good laugh watching your date try and skate in them.

Make sure you hit all the classic roller rink staples, like "The Chicken Dance," or "The Hokey Pokey." Don’t forget to do the limbo, and play other fun games like four corners and see who can stay in the longest.
