Welcome to the new Franklin Media

By Editorial Board, September 12, 2008

This week marks the official launch of TheFranklinOnline.com, a Web site two years in the making and dedicated completely to student media.

Because of that launch, you’ve noticed we’re doing some things differently. The internet means a deeply enriched experience for our readers. Online, where we’re without the constraints of time, length or a static medium, you’ll find videos, audio slideshows, photo galleries, extended stories and more.

This year you’ll continue to see the print edition used largely as a tool to point you in the direction of what’s on the Web site. Yes, the online teasers mean less space for stories and photos. But eight pages is more than enough to read when you pick up the dead-tree edition in the Student Center or on your way out of Old Main as it is.

The benefits of this change are incredible.

In the past you’ve had to wait until Friday to read coverage of sports games and campus events that might have happened five or six days before. If you visit TheFranklinOnline.com, that’ll never happen again. We’ll liveblog, with reporters and photographers on the scene, and post updates immediately.

This doesn’t mean we’re slacking on the print edition. As you can see, we’ve redesigned as we aim to achieve a more modern look.

But it does mean we believe there’s more to telling Franklin College’s stories than words and pictures printed once a week can possibly convey. That’s why we’re asking you to give it a try – check us out online at TheFranklinOnline.com.
