Veterans Day easily most important holiday

By Editorial Board, November 13, 2009

With the passing of Veterans Day on Wednesday, it’s important to take a moment to realize everything the holiday means.

Nov. 11 originally began as a holiday promoting worldwide peace. The holiday was originally known as Armistice Day, which celebrated the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.

One year later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day as Armistice Day, and Congress passed a resolution seven years later to devote appropriate ceremonies to the day. It became an official holiday in 1938.

Congress later adopted the idea of honoring veterans and changed the name of the holiday in 1954 to Veterans Day.

It’s important to remember the ending of World War I, but the current holiday is one of the most important we as Americans celebrate.

Veterans Day is unlike holidays such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, where families come together to have a good time. This is a holiday where we honor those who have fought to ensure we can continue to celebrate those other holidays.

The veterans have fought to protect the timeless values written out in the Declaration of Independence. They have made sure when the citizens of the United States lay their heads on their pillows at night, they are safe.

The men and women in our armed forces have sacrificed so much for this country, including time with their own families.

They have sacrificed their jobs, their homes and their ways of life.

They have spent time in foreign nations, off American soil. They have put their own lives in danger. They have done everything in their power to protect our country.

It can be easy to speculate what the world would be like without veterans, but it is safe to assume America would be vastly different. When the call to serve and protect went out, these brave individuals stood up and decided to take action.

For that, we owe our veterans a tremendous thank you. These people go through so much. Let’s show them as much gratitude as possible.
