Students do not benefit from summer classes

By Editorial Board, May 8, 2009

As the semester winds down, most students look forward to a much-needed break. But some students will not get much of a break by continuing their education in summer classes.

For $310 per credit hour and a $25-registration fee, students can spend a few more weeks at Franklin. But the way summer classes are set up doesn’t benefit them.

Registration would cost $955 for a three-credit hour class, or $1,265 for a four-credit hour class. That’s not to mention the $700 a month to live in the dorms, plus a 50-meal plan for $150. So that means a student would pay roughly $1,800 to live on campus and take one class.

For that kind of money, students should be getting more out of it. One month is not long enough for a class. Regular classes meet two or three times a week for 16 weeks, while summer classes meet five times a week for a month.

This means professors cannot possibly teach everything students need to know during summer courses. For $1,800, students are getting ripped off. They deserve the full experience.

Some students can’t work the classes they need into their schedules and can only take classes in the summer to graduate. Some students may even want to graduate early. These may be the only positive outcomes with Franklin’s summer courses.

But something needs to change.

Rather than offering two sections for classes, they should be combined into one section, offering classes that last two months.

This would give instructors twice as much time to cover material.

Also, since not as much information would be crammed into a short time, students will not have to do as much work during the summer. This could help set up students with internships or part-time jobs while taking classes.

In order to make a student’s time and money worthwhile, summer classes need to be more extensive and spread over a longer period of time.

Correct Facts
There are several errors in this article. Did you happen to pick up any information about summer housing from the student affairs office? It actually only costs $505 to live on campus for the entire summer. That's a far cry from your claim of "$700 a month". Also, there is NO meal plan offered during the summer, not a 50 meal plan for $150 that you claimed was offered. Seriously, did you do any research at all for this editorial? This is common information that is given to anyone that is applying to live on campus this summer. This is just more of the same from The Franklin, and it is disappointing.

Title
** it costs $740 to live on campus for the whole summer, not the $505 I stated previously, or the $700 per month that you claimed. ^^Maybe The Franklin can also admit their errors, as I have done?
