Letter: With so much at stake for women, Wave 3 should take stand

By Staff Report, October 9, 2008

Table tents distributed by Wave 3, the women’s issues group, have been a topic of discussion on TheFranklinOnline.com’s “Hypes & Gripes.”

Wave 3, the campus women’s rights group, decided to put up table tents listing the stances of both Barack Obama and John McCain on women’s issues. That led the author of a gripe to call Wave 3 the “Obama Club.”

Apparently, political involvement is great as long as no one actually takes a stance. One of the issues listed on the table tents is birth control, and a commenter said whether insurers pay for birth control is not a women’s rights issue. I think this is blatantly wrong. Birth control cost directly affects women.

McCain, when asked why he voted against requiring insurers to cover birth control, said, “I certainly don’t want to discuss that issue.” He didn’t remember the vote, and said he didn’t know enough to comment on it. He said he hadn’t “thought much about it.” Obama, however, has consistently voted for women’s rights.

A TIME Magazine article about the effect of rising birth control costs on college women reported that 39 percent of undergraduate women use birth control. However, with a price tag of $50 per month, some of those women might not be able to afford it for long.

This puts those women at risk for unwanted pregnancies, which often leads to them dropping out of college. With the tough economy, it’s vital that women receive college educations if they’re going to support themselves.

With so much at stake for almost 40 percent of college women, I refuse to vote for someone who doesn’t think much about the issue.

Obama Violates Women's Fundamental Rights by Supporting Abortion
Obama clearly states that he supports abortion (pre-birth and post-birth), emergency contraceptives (which includes RU-486 and IUDs) and embryonic stem cell research-- all three of which have the capability to destroy the life of a vulnerable, young woman. The children aborted by women are not solely of the male gender. An individual is naive to believe this is the case. The Declaration of Independece promises life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapiness to all. Furthermore, it is the government's job to protect those fundamental rights. Obama deliberately and blatantly removes those rights from a select group of females because of their age, their place of residence, and their sitation in life. Ms. Carrier, need I remind you, when you were very young, a woman (your mother) could have legally killed you on a whim if she desired? Finally, the issue of abortion is rooted in the philosophy of utilitarianism. Margaret Sanger (founder of what is now Planned Parenthood) sought to terminate the handicapped, ill, and minorities via abortion. Please visit the following websites for more info: http://www.blackgenocide.org/home.html www.100abortionpictures.com The "change" I would like to see brought to the United States of America is a change where all women-- regardless of age, residence, race and sitation-- are given an equal opportunity to possess life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
