Hassle of password change unneeded
Students have received multiple e-mails over the past week telling them they must change their password every 90 days. And the entire student body let out a collective groan.
Many students use the same password for all their usernames.
This means students will have to try to remember another password. It’s far more convenient to simply have one password than having several different ones to remember.
So, students will be writing down their new password. And they’ll have to put it somewhere so they can remember it. This will make the students vulnerable to getting having their passwords stolen. Then, if someone does hack the student’s account, his or her password will have to be changed yet again.
If a student forgets their password, Information Technology Services will have to unlock the computer for the student.
This is bound to happen multiple times. This is going to create a massive headache for IT.
The IT department is doing this for security reasons to help protect us, but we don’t need the extra security.
The system isn’t broken. We haven’t had anybody hack into the system, so why would we need to change our passwords every 90 days?
This system has been in place for a while, but the rule of changing a password every 90 days had never been strictly enforced.
So why the change?
There has been nothing major in the past that has spurred us to change our password. The college has an excellent security system that has kept hundreds of students safe over the years.
There’s no need to fix a system that is already working just fine.
