Endorsement: Zoeller for attorney general
A Greg Zoeller victory in the attorney general race would bring an aura of familiarity to the office. As chief deputy to current Attorney General Steve Carter, the Republican candidate already knows the workings of the principle lawmaker of the state.
While this campaign season’s main theme seems to be change, The Franklin believes the attorney general’s office is one that needs to remain constant. One of Zoeller’s main issues is to maintain a high-level of privacy for Indiana citizens, a right that needs to be protected at all costs.
Democratic candidate Linda Pence has been a successful trial attorney for 34 years. She’s won high-profile cases. More importantly, she’s identified the welfare of children as a primary issue of her campaign; a cause we wished was on the top of other politicians’ to-do list.
But The Franklin agrees with Zoeller. He said he believes it is not the attorney general’s role to become overly involved in litigation. Placing trust in county prosecutors is important for the attorney general’s office to ensure the winner is able to command the large pool of workers under the position and allow those elected at a county level to do their jobs.
Pence needs to continue to utilize her skills and ideals in the courtroom where the daily grind of the bureaucracy will not soften her effectiveness as an activist.
With the belief that the attorney general should be more of a manager than an all-out advocate, The Franklin endorses Greg Zoeller for the office of attorney general.
